Why not donate Halloween candy to the troops?
Make way for the candy! Halloween is a favorite holiday. When else can kids dress up in costume and gather sweets from neighbors?
But it can get a little out-of-hand. There’s so much candy that comes home from just one night of candy gathering. And we’re those parents who limit sweets, so the Halloween candy never seems to be consumed before there’s another candy-centric holiday popping up. I liken Halloween to the start of the candy holidays, with Easter rolling in at the end of the six-month cycle.
That’s why I’m thrilled to know about Operation Gratitude and Operation Shoebox. Both organizations are looking for candy donations to share with the troops overseas. So I’m not sure there’s an easier way for our kids to both support the troops and be a little healthier at the same time. Last year Operation Gratitude received and shipped 125 tons of candy to the troops.
While both organizations are sharing the candy, Operation Gratitude also has local dentists who are participating and holding events where kids can bring their extra candy to exchange for little prizes and, of course, toothbrushes. Check out HalloweenCandyBuyBack.com to find a participating dentist in your area. I found more than a dozen within 15 miles of our house to donate Halloween candy.
