I think successful contractors have learned that something unsuccessful and struggling contractors haven’t: We are professional business people first and craftsmen second. In other words, at the end of the day, ours is a customer service — not building — business.

Undeniably, practicing our craft and building maximum quality into our projects are vital, but what creates referrals, new customers, and enables us to develop productive relationships during long-term builds is service. Carpenters like to joke sometimes on site, quipping, “Can’t see it from my house.” Well, that’s funny — as long as it’s a joke and not the way you really do business.
