The Glidden Team Colors New England Patriots doghouse.

Our friends just adopted a new dog, so we thought it was a perfect opportunity to build a fun doghouse. We’ve been wanting to build a green roof, and love the idea of making a mini ‘dog cave’ for a canine football fan.

We used cedar 2×6 for the base of the doghouse. Cedar takes paint really well and is perfect for outdoors. We used 3/4-inch OSB for the floor. A 4-foot by 4-foot footprint works well for  a larger dog, and the modularity makes it easier to construct.

In addition to making the doghouse spacious, and weather proof, we also wanted the doghouse to be bold with New England Patriots colors, so we used Glidden Team Colors for the color scheme.

We also wanted to give the dog a mini football field on top of the doghouse, so he has his own special spot to keep an eye on the yard. The blue planks on the bottom are ground-contact rated pressure treated pine, and will help prevent a muddy area from forming outside the doghouse.

The paint is Glidden Team Colors. The design and how-to, MyFixitUpLife originals.

Build a base. We used cedar and pressure treated pine.

Two things, sort of, happening here. First, we used our plywood work table to map out the shape of the doghouse. Then used it as a workbench to assemble the pine tongue and groove wall panels. And then there’s the face.

Assemble the wall panels on a workbench. We used pine tongue and groove boards.

Front, back and side walls plus base.

Cross-pieces (called purlins for DIY devotees) support the 1/2-inch OSB roof deck and hold the four walls together.

Add purlins and roof sheeting.

1. Style matters. 2. Trim boards made from pine 1×3 give the doghouse a home-style look. And they add a layer for paint and color.

Add trim boards. Style points count.

Adding the upper deck. Roofing membrane plus redwood 2×6 plus cedar shingles mean doggy stays dry while the doghouse is running a 4.4 style 40.

Roof membrane, cedar shingles, and a redwood ‘upper deck’.

Color is the game-winning field goal that makes this the game-winning doghouse. Of course, the dog that lives here has a, gulp, super bowl. Glidden Team Colors bring this puppy to life.

We painted this dog house New England Patriots style using Glidden Team Colors.

Glidden Team Colors New England Patriots Red is the color pop on the walls. We used semi-gloss exterior paint for optimu durability. To get good coverage on the tongue and groove pine walls (there’s a V-joint between the boards) we used 2-inch paint brushes to ‘cut in’.

Cut in V-joint pine panels with a brush, then roll. Or just finish with the brush.

New England Patriot Blue gives the roof its champion look. We dabbed the ends (butts) of the shingles with brushes to make sure the end-grains really got good coverage. Glidden paint went on well with brush and roller. I have used a lot of paint and when it doesn’t work, it’s not fun. I don’t have to say that either. Impressive coverage and color. Hut-HUT!
