How To Remove a Chain-Link Fence

Question: I just bought a row-house in the city. There is a ratty old chain-link fence between my neighbor’s concrete driveway and mine. I can use a wrench and sockets to take the fence apart, but the posts are set in concrete. What’s the best way to take them out?

Answer: I have two answers for you. First, you’re right: wrenches, sockets, locking-pliers are the go-to tools for dismantling the fence from the poles and taking the gate apart (if there is one.)

Second, depending on how long the fence is, simply taking down the chain-link portion of it and rolling it up might be difficult. Despite looking light and airy, once your start to roll up the fencing, it gets way heavy, way fast. The solution is easy — bolt cutters. They make it fairly easy to cut the fence in sections. They also work where a shrub or tree has grown in with the links and either (or both) have to come out.
