Punch cell batteries lighten new DEWALT cordless power tools

Lightweight cordless tools can be a blessing. For those of us with fewer jacked muscles and less endurance than our companions (yeah, I’m looking at you Mark), it’s especially appreciated.

It’s true that the heft of some tools can actually deliver the brutal-umph needed get some jobs done through the power of force (mass x acceleration). It’s also true that a lighter impact driver or cordless saw for repetitive work is more than welcome.

What’s the battery in these lightweight cordless tools?

Called the POWERSTACK, the tool company claims its stacked pouch battery weighs 15 percent less and delivers 50 percent more power than their 20V Max Compact Lithium Ion Battery Pack (DCB203). Plus, the batteries are 25 percent more compact, making it easier to work in cramped and tiny spaces. That’s a little bit of extra room on the shelf or tool truck for something else.

The batteries also include an LED fuel gauge that displays the level of charge. And, a handy rubber overmold to help with impact resistance.

Do I need to buy new tools to use the new batteries?

It’s not necessary to buy a new line of tools to use these new POWERSTACK batteries. If you already own some of the 20V Max tools, the 20V MAX* DEWALT POWERSTACK™ Compact Battery works with the complete line of 20V MAX* tools and chargers.

Available December 1st in North America, and globally in 2022.

And yes, we’re ready to get our hands on the POWERSTACK and see how they perform in real life. We’d love to know what you think about punch cell battery technology. Do you think the lower weight and size would make a difference in your work? Share your comments below or send us a note.
