How to create a Minecraft bedroom and custom mural

There are so many Minecraft ideas to makeover a kid’s bedroom, and we decided that paint was our Minecraft makeover’s best friend to create this themed bedroom with custom mural based on our son’s favorite Minecraft characters.

Makeover mission: ‘Minecraft’ our son Jack’s bedroom

Yes. Our 7-year-old Jack is among the more than 100 million Minecraft gamers around the world.

And I’m totally supportive of the ‘creative’ version of the game.

Full disclosure: I’m a mom who avoids anything that is violent or upsetting, and my favorite movie is Mary Poppins, which I have watched on my birthday for more than 25 years.

There’s the thought process, planning skills, ingenuity, concentration, and dedication that it takes to put the blocks and elements together for creations to be born. All good stuff.

Makeover inspiration

So when my son wanted to use five of his Minecraft Mini Figures as a focal element in his big boy bedroom makeover, I was happy to take on his makeover challenge.

During that initial ‘design meeting,’ we decided that a mural of the five faces would be good. And Jack wanted to use the blue from a clementine crate we use to store books on his desk.

When we were expecting Jack, we did a nursery makeover. But, I was adamant on making a room that would be relevant for our son through baby, toddler, and the little boy years of his life. And I wanted to make sure we didn’t have to buy furniture when we embarked on the next bedroom makeover. We chose a Murphy bed, which creates a larger play space for Jack and his friends, and built-ins for his clothes and toys. Instead of a changing table, we built a desk that we used as a changing table, and he now uses as his desk.

So far, my plan from 8 years ago is working out, and this makeover is mostly a paint makeover. My favorite kind of makeover.

Getting started

Ready to tackle the project, I first needed to select the paint.

We chose to use Glidden’s new Complete paint that’s available at Walmart. Yes, Walmart. So if you want to paint your bathroom at 3am, and you have a 24-hour Walmart, you can.

Complete is paint and primer in one, and it also has stain blocking, low odor, low VOC, and it’s scrubbable. As you can imagine, in a 7-year-old’s room, all of these qualities are beneficial.

After gathering paint chips, I went in Jack’s bedroom and matched the clementine box, and the Minecraft characters with the color chips.

It sounds like it takes longer to go gather the paint chips, then select the color at home, then go back to the store to buy the paint. In the long run, you’ll save time and have a happier experience. The kind of light in a space, and the other colors in the room can greatly affect the way a paint color looks. A grey paint in one room can look pink in another. I’ve seen it happen.

Painting

The first part of the makeover was creating the Minecraft character mural. I used a grid to layout the minecraft heads, and shared a blog about how to create a mural on MyColortopia.com. And then I used the Minecraft logo as a background to the characters, creating 6-inch squares in greens and browns.

After we painted the rest of the room in the clementine box color, Glidden’s Deep Arctic Night blue, I decided to use the Marine Blue color of Steve’s helmet for behind the bed, and created a flag for Jack’s space in a few of the other colors.

Finishes & decor

Since this is a big boy room now, we wanted to add some more texture to the space. My husband Mark and I added a wood wainscoting using a variety of wood finishes to mimic the Minecraft look. We used Prefinished Wood Accents and Gorilla Glue for this part of the makeover.

With a new light, hexagon carpet tiles, and a bed spread from Ikea, the big boy bedroom is complete.

I hope you’ll watch the video to see Jack’s reaction when we saw the room makeover reveal.

We’re so happy about the makeover, and thankful that Glidden supported this blog, we have a contest to give away 5 gallons of Glidden Complete 2-in-1 paint for your next makeover project. We think you’ll be as impressed as we are about the coverage and quality of the Complete paint.
