November 6, 2010: Lead-Safe Renovations

Mark and Theresa are talking lead-safe renovations with help from Tamara Myers of the design/build firm Myers Constructs.

About 1 million children have been damaged to some degree by lead poisoning in the last decade.

And 78 million homes across this country may still contain lead paint.

Lead Check lead paint test

The new lead paint Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) rule states that any contractor working in a home with lead paint who disturbs more than six square feet of painted surface inside or 20 square feet outside must be certified and follow EPA guidelines to prevent lead contamination.

For 100 years, scientific reports have warned that lead paint was harmful to children, yet the product continued to be produced until the U.S. paint and coatings industry voluntarily reduced its use of lead pigments (which help paint dry faster) in consumer paints in the 1950s. Then the Consumer Products Safety Commission banned lead in consumer paints in 1978.

Mark & Theresa talk with LeadCheck’s Joe Moriarty makers of EPA Recognized LeadCheck Swabs. The $3 lead test is an immediate-results test that’s available at Lowe’s, Sherwin-Williams, Ace, and online at LeadCheck.com. Created by a doctor 23 years ago, LeadCheck is a simple product that provides invaluable peace of mind. Listen to the interview with Joe to find out more about Renovation, Repair, and Painting Rule and how to keep your family safe during your next remodeling project.

Find out what you need to know to make sure your family stays safe during an old-house renovation with the help from LeadCheck, lead safe work practices, and lead testing your kids.

They also talk about innovative ways to use old books, surprising lead-unsafe YouTube videos, Scotts PatchMaster and EZ-seed, the tax credit for energy efficient home improvements, the hidden costs of a DIY lifestyle, and they give away a Rockwell Sonicrafter to one lucky fan.
