Here’s a little post about a big thought regarding our DIY family.
Seeing 13-year-old Jack help put flat pack furniture together reminds me of his 1-year-old self experiencing little tools for the first time. Does not seem so long ago that he wore this toddler tool belt and played with his Handy Manny tool set.
Fast-forward to today, and our kid has a grown-up sized tool belt and grown-up tools. He knows his way around our workshop and tool trucks, he probably knows every aisle of the home improvement centers near our home, and he knows how to unload the dump truck, too. Jack has helped with deck projects, car fixes, and demo. He knows that stacking lumber properly is key to an efficient job site, and he knows that his parents take home improvement seriously.
Gone are the days when I used to write blogs in his voice. He has become a talented writer and an improv performer at our local improv club. While Jack isn’t as interested in home improvement as his parents, he is a capable part of our DIY family.
So witnessing him not need my help this reminds me that nature never stops. Nothing is permanent. And each moment is a treasure.
“Nature is an event that never stops.”

Do you have a DIY family, too? When did your kids start tackling projects on their own?
