How to decide on paint color? Here are a few tips.

One of the most popular questions asked of me is what paint color should I use for a home.

Color is so very personal and expressive. Hitting the right hue can actually help keep you mentally-centered to handle all of the stress that–unlike color–is not controllable.

With so many options, selecting livable color choices for a home can seem overwhelming, but it can be really quite simple.

Here’s how to choose a paint color

If you look at your favorite basics in your closet, the interior you picked in your car, and the views that calm you–beach, mountains, snow, lakes–then you can pull those colors to make them the background of your life inside your home. Just focus on the colors that you’ve already chosen to surround you, and start from there.

For example, chances are that you have a painting or photo on your wall that soothes your soul. Any image typically contains colors that are neutrals or colors that at least work very well with a range of other colors. Then for interest, layer a few pops of color from that palette within your decor that are easier to change out–think pillows and throws.

Why not always choose your favorite color?

For wall color, hesitate before you paint a room your favorite color, as some colors may be too bold for such a large statement. Especially when you share a home with family who may not agree on that color.

I like to say that even though red may be your favorite color, when you relax, do you look at red? Or do you look at the sunrise, the moon, grassy landscape, or the light shimmering off of a lake…?

Focus on what your family loves and pull colors from those places.

Your family will be impressed that you are able to capture the essence of what makes your family happy and unique.

Enjoying a room that’s painted to your inspirational tastes can be as delightful as sipping champagne on a Tuesday afternoon.
