Quick sparkly holiday tree ornaments and DIY decor with Liz Latham

Big or small, it is always fun to add a bit of personality to a holiday tree or tree ornaments.

Liz Latham inspired these little tree ornaments during our live DIY on blab.

Last year I was head-over-heels into fringe.

This year, it’s about the luze look. If I can add sparkle or shine to my DIY crafts or home decor, I’m a happy designer. So when Hoosier Homemade‘s Liz Latham suggested we make tree decor as a fun project during the 4 1/2 hour DIY Con I hosted, I chirped “yes!”

My intention was for Liz to show how she turned cardboard trees into a divine mantlescape, while I recreated the fringe trees I had already made last holiday, showing everyone tuning in how easy it is. I also gathered up cardstock, because it’s actually easy to make your own cone base for a tree.

But when I got a hold of mini cardboard cones, while I was talking with Liz during the live DIY Con, I got inspired to make ornaments. You can buy a pack from Amazon or a craft store for just a few dollars, or seriously, make your own and save those dollars for the embellishments.

The steps to making tree ornaments:

  1. spray paint (or hand paint) the paper mache cones
  2. after dry, apply embellishments with hot glue
  3. poke a wire through the top of the cone and bend into a hook
  4. hang your trees to decorate for the holiday
  5. sit, drink coffee, and enjoy your DIY

Here’s the list of supplies:

  • Paper mache cones (or cardstock to make your own)
  • Spray paint (I always use Krylon, because it dries evenly and quickly)
  • Wire
  • Mini pliers
  • Embellishments

For the DIY con blab project, I gathered hot glue, paint, paper, fringe, and ribbon to make holiday tree decor.
I made these fringe trees last holiday, and had every intention to do the how-to during DIY con, but I got inspired for another new project.
Liz Latham from Hoosier Homemade created this little mantelscape using cones. It’s her inspiration for our DIY con project.
Liz Latham always makes me smile! It’s fun to DIY with friends, especially friends who love to make stuff.
These little ornaments are so easy to make. It’s just a cone, spray paint, and embellishments hot glued.
Any pattern or color is perfection when you are making holiday tree ornaments. Here is blue, silver, and green trees, which would be divine larger scale on a mantel or tablescape, too.
