What should I look for in a Murphy bed?

The 'before' photo of Jamie's project room

Hi!

We are planning a murphy bed, and I came across your site as I was doing research on the “wallbed factory: an old creek company”.

How is the bed quality-wise? How was the whole buying process? And how ’bout the installation? Did it go well? How long did delivery and then installation take? Would you purchase from them again? Any advice?

Thank you so much… Your boy’s room turned out beautifully!! ; )

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for writing to MyFixItUpLife. We love questions like this.

However, I have a mason tearing out a block wall in our kitchen and we have to run out to the studio to interview Paige Hemmis for an upcoming show so I can’t answer you in detail till later. Hopefully I can whet your appetite by saying the Wallbed Factory bed we installed is a home-run.

Quality—The www.WallBedFactory.com bed we installed is super-solid, very high quality.

Buying Process—Excellent. They have pros both on the phone (I highly recommend talking to someone). They even have installers that’ll come to your home.

Installation—Assuming you can get the bed you order to t…he room it needs to go—SEE “ADVICE” BELOW—assembly is fairly straightforward. I always read ALL the direction first, then separate small parts into organized piles, make sure I have all necessary tools and stuff, then start putting it together. The only confusion for us was figuring our how to orient the headboard. You want the light switch (if you have one) on top so it can be easily reached…I recommend a light kit…it is lovely. Installation took several hours. I recommend pre-drilling holes as needed because you’ll probably be dealing with hardwood. Pre-drilling makes driving the screws easier. Delivery depends on the bed you order and where you live. Different sites have different challenges (we had to shim one leg of the wallbed to make up for a slanted floor for example) so be ready to improvise to keep the wallbed box plumb, level and square. I would purchase from them in a heartbeat.

Advice—The tray (the box the mattress sits in) comes in one piece. At least mine did. What that means is that if you have a winder staircase, corners to get around, an elevator to deal with, etc. then getting that box—the double bed size we have is wider than a mattress and beau coups heavy—from delivery site to bedroom needs to be thought through (see above “talk to someone”). Make sure it fits before ordering!

Thanks—Thank you very much on the room. Theresa is a great designer and working with www.OldCreekWallBedFactory.com and adding cabinets instead of closets really makes a big difference.

The 'after' photo!

Hi Mark & Theresa,

Here are the before and afters of the wallbed (see right) we purchased from Old Creek. The afters are less than 2 hours after the before. ; )

We were soooooooo impressed with the quality, attention to detail, everything!

Thanks for the recommendation!
