Pros and experienced DIYers know their tape measure well and have made so many measurements that bending the tape into the corner can deliver exact distances. However, you have to be able to know which line on the tape will set into the corner. If you aren’t super confident with this method, then try one of the methods below.

Measure out 2 inches and then measure to the mark.

An easy way to get an accurate measurement is to just measure out from the corner a few inches. Make a mark and then measure to that mark. Just be sure your mark is precise.

Use a 10-inch block and measure to that.

You likely have some scraps from your project already in the trash pile. Grab a scrap and cut it to 10 inches. Then snug the block into the corner, measure to the block, and add 10 inches.

Use the body of the tape measure.

Most every tape measure has a measurement on the side of it. This indicates the length of the tape measure. You can tuck the body of the tape into the corner, read the distance to the mouth of the tape, and add the length of the tape’s body to it.
