A sunny sophisticated bathroom makeover in just an afternoon

Yes, it’s possible to complete a mini bathroom makeover in just an afternoon, if you are strategic.

We embraced the yellow and added some quick sophistication instead.
We embraced the yellow and added some quick sophistication instead.

It’s a story that we all know too well. My friend found the perfect home for her growing family, and then she showed me the photo of the master bathroom. Oh.

Her ideal new home would be a little oasis for her family, where they could have everything to keep the foursome amused and comforted without having to trek out.

But let’s say it again. The master bathroom.

It was preserved from 1980. Charming from a designer’s historical view, but not anything she wanted. The small bathroom was covered in yellow tile, lit by fluorescent tube lights, and half of the bathroom was a way-less-than-awesome glass shower. With the tight budget that comes with most every new home, I suggested a few updates that wouldn’t require any remodeling.

Instead of tearing out the yellow tile, we embraced the color, and chose to paint the rest of the walls in the same color (Jonquil, SW 6674). The idea of the paint is to help the yellow tile fade into the background.

The bathroom vanity gave the biggest opportunity for a stylish impact, so most of our time was devoted to this. It’s the first thing you see when you open the bathroom door, so if it said “hello, I’m stylish,” then the rest of the bathroom could seem better by association. We chose a saturated charcoal-brown called Peppercorn (SW 7674) for the vanity. The richer hue also helped the upper cabinet breathe a new modern life.

The previous homeowners left some trim in the garage, and I cut the trim and painted it to frame the mirror above the vanity.

We swapped out the fluorescent lighting, and I made curtains in the same strong feminine color scheme, but in a masculine stripe.

I hope you enjoyed this bathroom makeover. And, I’d love to know what you think. Share your ideas and questions in the comments below.
