Floral wallpaper with dark backgrounds are popping up in every room.

Bold floral wallpaper is a confident interior design statement.

Saturated hues and exaggerated statements are eye-catching online and in-person. It’s not a personal interior design choice for the faint of heart. It takes confidence and a love of high-energy style to select an oversized floral wallpaper with a dark background.

Personally, I’m into it. I love a bold color, but the look of this oversized floral is disarming to me, and for some reason, it relaxes me at the same time. A strange reaction, but wholly positive.

The oversized florals remind me of interior design maven Dorothy Draper’s fabrics and wallcoverings from the first half of the 20th century. Her style rules included using happy, full-blown flowery patterns and always incorporating a touch of black.

“Why live in a drab world, when you can fill your room with the colors of a summer garden?” -Dorothy Draper

How to use bold floral wallpaper

If you are into trying out this look in your home, there are a few style suggestions to help you get started with floral wallpaper.

  1. You may want to balance out the background of bold blooms with just one or two colors in the rest of the space or stick with neutrals to let the print steal the show. See the images below for how a handful of wallpaper companies present the look.
  2. Before committing to the look, you may want to order a sample and create a triptych series of wall art for a room. If you love the look, you can always cover the entire wall later.
  3. You may want to cover just the top half of a wall with the floral wallcovering, and use chair rail to separate it from the area below. Either use a solid paint color, raised wood paneling, or beadboard to fill in the space at the bottom.

Any way you choose to try the look of an oversized floral, you’ll be making a major style statement.
