Fixing a Flip: Deck makeover with cable railing system

Theresa MyFixitUpLife RailFX wood deck

We helped one new homeowner by replacing her backyard deck with a larger wood deck and opening up her view to nature with a sophisticated cable railing system.

Why did we remodel the deck?

Buying a flipped house seems like a good idea, since someone has already done all of the work for you. Unfortunately, not every flipped home is as well-built as it seems it pretty listing photos online or during a quick walk-through. Sometimes those shiny new finishes are hiding hidden problems.

The homeowner bought a flipped home, and there are problems inside and out. We started with the deck, as the previous owners had installed a few new boards here and there to cover up some decay. Not only did the homeowner want a new safer deck that has a longer lifespan, she also wanted a larger deck that opened up her backyard to her view of trees and the setting sun in the evenings.

What did we do?

We tore down the old deck, taking it apart in reverse order. After site work, digging post holes, setting posts, and building the new frame, the deck was ready for new wood decking.

Then we installed a cable railing system from RailFX. We were planning to use a cable railing system, and then RailFX contacted us to see if we’d like to try it out. It was perfect timing, and we had a direct line to ask them questions about installation.

Note: We were not paid by RailFX to install the cable railing system.

How does the deck look now?

The homeowner and her dog Speckles are very happy with the new larger deck. Following the remodel, they can enjoy their view to nature and the sunset. The deck has ample room for more furniture and outdoor cooking, and it’s a great spot to host a party.

DId you also get the posts from Rail FX? If not, where did you get the posts you used? They look sturdier (maybe 3×3) than some other companies I’ve seen.

Yes, the posts come with the RailFX system. They are sturdy. Since you need to string the cable through the pre-drilled posts, we found that it easiest to start at the bottom. Otherwise it’s tough to see the cable threading through the posts.
