Improve Your Home Strategically: Focus on Most Used Spaces

Improve Your Home _ MyFixitUpLife

Homeowners always have a list of things to do around the house. Some days it can seem endless. We used to vacation to explore the world and enjoy ourselves. After 20+ years of owning homes, we also enjoy traveling because we don’t have to fix anything at a hotel or AirBnB. Instead of keeping an endless list, organize it by room and focus on those most used spaces. We encourage you to improve your home strategically.

Clean & Declutter the Entryway

A regular cleaning schedule creates helpful guardrails for a homeowner. By making a habit of cleaning one day each week, your house won’t be able to get out of control. Tidying makes a home more attractive and inviting to you and your friends.

Start by addressing that drop zone by the entryway. That zone is where everyone leaves their shoes, coats, bags, and packages. It collects items because you and your family are deferring the task of putting things away, and the pile grows. Think about what everyone leaves by the doorway, and put shelves, lockers, cabinets, or storage bench where those items collect. It’s easier to get your family to put things away in the place where they typically the items.

Refocus the Bedroom Space

If you want to sleep better and feel refreshed every morning, then focus on the bedroom space when you have time and energy to improve your home. Transform it into a room that makes you feel calm and at ease. Choose high-quality sheets, add a cozy rug, and room darkening window treatments. Paint the walls a soothing color, ditch the TV or gaming console for another room, and include both overhead lighting and task lighting for reading. A lamp on your bedside table is an inviting way to promote nighttime reading. You may also want to get some furniture pieces that also have storage space in them so you can keep the room well-organized and clean.

If you have a large primary bedroom and you need the room to serve another function, you can also add aesthetic appeal and character to your bedroom by investing in a sliding door kit. It’s the perfect solution for dividing a space without taking up floor space with a door that swings.

Set Up A Backyard Oasis

One of the best ways to destress and rejuvenate your mind is to sit in nature and enjoy the outdoors. If you are lucky enough to have a decent yard, enhance and improve your property by setting up a backyard oasis. Include a grilling area with comfortable furniture, an umbrella or retractable awning, and consider power washing your deck or patio annually to ensure it stays clean. And get rid of anything that you are no longer using.

If you have the space, consider growing your own food in raised planters, traditional beds, or small containers on the patio or deck. You can add some privacy by installing a fence or make the space a bit shadier by building a pergola. Hang some string or fairy lights that are solar-powered and timed to automatically turn on at night. Colorful flowers and plants along the border of your deck or patio that are native to your area and are season-appropriate.

Update the Master Bathroom

One of the most essential rooms in your home is the primary bathroom. It’s where homeowners spend time getting ready every morning and its aesthetics can affect your mood and mojo each day. Be sure to include layered lighting options and storage solutions. If you never use the bathtub, maybe you could use the space differently and install a new and larger spa shower with a rain shower head and electronic controls.

More cost-friendly options include updating an old vanity and hardware or painting your current vanity a new color that pops. Hang up some new mirrors and invest in some new plush towels for an updated look and feel. And get rid of all of those beauty products that you have put aside and aren’t using.

If you haven’t used it in the past year, you aren’t likely to use it next year.
