FixitUpFinds: Smart countertops?

Yes, your countertops could be getting smarter.

Oasis Counter

Our friends at Charles & Hudson tipped us off that Intel is developing the technology to make it possible for countertops to recognize commands through hand motions, objects being placed on them, and even create an interactive experience.

Now, to me countertops can be gorgeous, but to-date my interactions have been completely one-sided. I didn’t even know that my relationship with my kitchen counter could be enhanced beyond it being pretty, flat, cleared of the collection of family debris, and just plain ol’ reliable. But, Intel has opened my eyes to a new possibility.

Using the OASIS technology, the counter could not only know I put a bell pepper and a sweet potato on the counter, it would also be able to tell me recipes using those ingredients, add those missing ingredients to my store list, and tell me if I already have those items in my refrigerator or pantry. I’m so excited by this, that I’m also confused and a bit bewildered.

For now, I am going to go back to my current, more comfortable excitement level about the DuPont Illumination surfaces that have lights behind them. And I’m still looking for a reason to incorporate them into an upcoming project.
